Two more things:
* The "30 seconds" appears to be consistent - each time, the fade-out
seems to cut to zero at exactly 30 seconds. I can restart the sound
file/video and get 30 more seconds. It's as if I'm using some Windows
eval software that only gives me a half-minute sound clip.

* [don@dauphin ~]$ aplay -L
default
     Default
front:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
     HDA NVidia, STAC92xx Analog
     Front speakers
surround40:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
     HDA NVidia, STAC92xx Analog
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
     HDA NVidia, STAC92xx Analog
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
     HDA NVidia, STAC92xx Analog
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
     HDA NVidia, STAC92xx Analog
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
     HDA NVidia, STAC92xx Analog
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers

In case that helps...
