How to compile a kernel?

I'm sorry with my bad English.

I'm using Fedora 12 X86_64
I have downloaded a kernel(2.6.32.2).
Then,I do these:
cd linux-2.6.32.2
cp /boot/config-`uname -r` .config
make menuconfig
make all
make modules_install
make install
reboot

When I choose the new kernel,I found it's very slow when run with X,I spend 5 minutes to open gnome, and It's too hard to run any application.

How to solve this?
