If you're using the Empathy client in Fedora 12 (or Fedora 11 for that
matter), the "People nearby" function from the telepathy-salut package
handles this nicely.

You'll need to make sure the firewalls on each machine permit port
5353 (mDNS, which you can enable from the simple, up-front list) and
TCP port 5289 (which you will need to enter in the custom list).

Then you can set each person up to run Empathy on startup to have
station-to-station IM within your home.  This is obviously limited to
people who are logged in, but often people in my home stay logged in
and just use Switch User when needed.
