If you want to do it using e-mail, there's the option of using the
Dovecot package.  But if everybody's using the same computer, you can
just send mail to each other with the already installed sendmail.  You
just need to get each mail client to also grab local mail (by reading
the file for themselves in /var/mail/<their-user-name>), as well as
whatever mail they already get.

Don't send private replies to my address, the mailbox is ignored.  I
read messages from the public lists.
