Continuting the rant spirit:

Nope, they have once again completely rewritten the video
system in order to make the compiz nonsense work and allow
compositing window managers to run 99% faster (of course
window managers only use about 0.001% of the time on the
machine, but by golly they can run faster with compositing -
if the video drivers ever recover from the rewrites
that is :-).

I've never installed from an actual DVD, but there is supposed
to be a "use basic video" install option in the main menu.

I got a machine at work to install by adding the "vesa" option
to the installer kernel boot options. Possibly that should
have been "xdriver=vesa" but vesa seemed to work for me all
by itself.
