Have you done either  "yum clean metadata" or "yum clean all"?

yes. see here:

[root@davehost dave]# yum clean metadata

0 metadata files removed
0 sqlite files removed
0 metadata files removed
[root@davehost dave]# yum update
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again
[root@davehost dave]# yum clean all
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit
Cleaning up Everything
[root@davehost dave]# yum update
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit
