Accessing vfat filesystem via nfs locks up server & client

I am exporting a vfat filesystem from a machine "server" to another
machine "client" using nfs. The filesystem appears to mount OK on
client, but any attempt to actually access it on the client -- say by
running
	[client $] ls vfat-filesystem
locks up the ls process on the client and also locks up access to
vfat-filesystem on the server -- say by running
	[server $] ls vfat-filesystem
now locks up the ls process on the server. Before running ls on the
client access to vfat-filesystem on the server was possible.

I was under the impression that vfat filesystems could be exported using
nfs. Is this correct?

Thanks - jon
