does the 64 bit version of Sun's java run applets as a plugin yet? I
hadn't heard that it works.


Yes. It works.

cd /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins

sudo ln -s /opt/java/jre1.6.0_12/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so  .

replacing /opt/java for the directory you installed jre.
