This can be done with sections.  Put the caret where you want the
non-columned area to part.  Go to Insert->Section.  Type a section name
(doesn't really matter), then click Insert.  The new section will appear
(it looks like a single line of text, with borders above and below), and
the caret should be inside.  Put the non-columned data there.  You can
simply put more columned data below the new section.

Let me know if that works.  I have a test document that I can email you
if needed.
