That will happen about 10 years after Balmer throws his last chair.  If M$ 
lasts that much longer.

Yes, but there are different ways to do it.  Someone will probably tell you 
the easiest way though.

Install bind. And there have been whole forests cut to furnish the paper to 
describe how to properly configure bind.  Visit Borders & see what they have.  
Its a very complex subject and from my reading there is no one universally 
correct way to do it.  But you probably need only dhcp for a home network.  
Only ISP's normally run a server.

Here, I hard code all my local addresses in the /etc/hosts file, and what 
doesn't resolve there gets handed to my router, which in turn gets it from 
one of the two servers verizon operates.

You can run 'nscd' Name Server Cacheing Daemon, which will store the results 
of a query to the ISP's server, making that same site resolve faster if 
you've been there before and not too long ago.  It can save quite a bit of 
lookup time if your pipe is a dialup.
