I don't see how applying the updates removed yum. Did you try removing
yum manually?

Hi Richard,

nope, as in my reply to Kevin, I clicked on the "Bug" icon from PackageKit in the Gnome panel, clicked on "update system" and whoosh, there was everything, gone!
