'similar' is not the same as 'same'.

if every computer had *exact same* hardware, ok. but they are not *exactly*
same.

It doesn't break anything to have a few unused modules linked - you could probably have one kernel that would make initrd unnecessary on the majority of desktop/laptop machines - and servers (where you need specific scsi drivers) typically aren't booted frequently anyway.
