Realising that you've already solved your issue, but for the benefit of

Anywhere that's readable, and not going to get formatted during the
install routine. You're asked for the drive partition and directory.

e.g. You might preformat a /tmp partition before installation, put the
downloaded DVD install ISO file in there, and make sure that partition
is not reformatted or erased when you do the installation. Post
installation, you could write an fstab entry that mounts that partition
onto /tmp.

It is possible to start an installation using that, but I was referring
to the small ISO file available from the various Fedora repos. Here's
what's available on one of my local mirrors:

Fedora-9-i386-DVD.iso 3,496,758 KB 08/05/08 01:54:00
Fedora-9-i386-disc1.iso 623,568 KB 08/05/08 01:58:00
Fedora-9-i386-disc2.iso 652,424 KB 08/05/08 01:58:00
Fedora-9-i386-disc3.iso 636,812 KB 08/05/08 01:59:00
Fedora-9-i386-disc4.iso 652,390 KB 08/05/08 01:59:00
Fedora-9-i386-disc5.iso 649,294 KB 08/05/08 01:59:00
Fedora-9-i386-disc6.iso 283,656 KB 08/05/08 01:59:00
Fedora-9-i386-netinst.iso 116,440 KB 08/05/08 01:52:00
SHA1SUM 1 KB 08/05/08 02:03:00

The netinst.iso is a disc that can be used to install from a network, or
other locations. I think it offers more than just the boot.iso file
does that you mention (such as a rescue environment).
