What, if anything, is running on the laptop now?
If you have some version of Linux running,
you could download Fedora to the hard disk,
and install from that.

I copied the KDE Live CD to a (fairly large) USB stick,
following instructions at
<http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraLiveCD/USBHowTo>.
