You should not need a channel number.

Mode should be Managed to connect to an access point.

If you are going to use peerdns, you do not need to specify the DNS servers. You should only need one anyway.

I am using Fedora 8, with XFCE, though Gnome is installed too.

Because you are not using Network Manager to control the interface, it does not matter what desktop you are using.

My ADSL modem is Siemens SL2_141. I kept the wireless setting there
like:

Basic --> Enable Wireless --> (checked)
SSID --> ddnet
Country --> India
Enable Wireless Guest Network --> (unchecked)

Security --> Select SSID --> (ddnet)
Network Authentication --> Open
WEP Encryption --> Disabled

In my 'system-config-network' in the laptop I have kept the settings
like this:

wlan0 --> Activate device when computer starts
Automatically obtain IP address --> DHCP
Automatically obtain DNS Information --> (checked)

Wireless Settings Mode --> Auto
Network Name --> Specified --> ddnet
Channel --> 1
Transmit rate --> Auto
Key --> (nothing)

I have tried the Network name --> (Auto) too, with the same results.

With the minor changes I pointed to above, it should work. The only thing that may have to change is to tell the 3945 driver that it should use the India wireless frequency map instead of the U.S.A. map that I believe it uses by default. But I don't know how to do that off hand. Hopefully, someone that does will jump in here. If not, I will see what I can find when I have time.
