Some versions of k3b fail to pull the disc back in for the verify, and that's 
the error message you get.  At that point md5sum or sha1sum is, as you 
realised, the best bet for verifying.

FWIW, I believe that I set my drive not to eject on completion, and I think 
that cured it.
