F9: X and firefox cause high cpu load on continuous mouse movement

I am using the xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-173.14.05-1.lvn9.i386 driver.
On fast and continuous mouse movements the cpu load as shown in top
increases to about 20% each. My first guess is that the changes
to the GUI elements due to mouse over take a lot of cpu to
render, since this driver is marked as with "preliminary support
for xorg 1.5". Can somebody confirm this?
