Now that you mention it, I do recall this issue when I first installed F8 on
this machine.

Tried it, still no good.

I do see that playing with the volume slider in xev is generating:
    state 0x0, keycode 176 (keysym 0x1008ff13, XF86AudioRaiseVolume),
same_screen YES,

But it seems XF86AudioRaiseVolume isn't getting to kmix.

Similarly, the mute soft key:
    state 0x0, keycode 160 (keysym 0x1008ff12, XF86AudioMute), same_screen
YES,

doesn't seem to do anything.
