I think that is a perfectly reasonable approach.
I have followed it several times.

I would advise to make a copy of /etc/grub.conf in case it gets deleted.
Also of course make sure you _don't_ format /boot during installation.
Personally, I always partition a new disk with fdisk before installation,
and go to Custom Installation (not quite the right name)
rather than using the default DiskDruid, which I don't like or trust.
(Does anyone?)
