Isn't it managed somehow by clam or amavis?

I have an postfix+mailscanner configuration in which the
startup/shutdown of postfix is managed through MailScanner.

You could try and issue the command

service postfix stop

while running the machine and see the results. If you get an ok answer
then it's nothing wrong with postfix. You may also want to try an

service amavisd (or clamd) stop

and see if there is postfix running after this.

Anyway, this is a 2c thought.
