As I indicated previously, I have always been able to use the scanner, and so have other users logged into the box. The problem is getting saned to to work.

I got saned working by putting it in a wrapper that enables debugging, and called it from /etc/inittab rather than xinetd. Now my son can use the scanner from his machine. I would rather have gotten it working under xinetd, and might have another go at that some time in the future.
