You are free to use some other *ix-like OS that isn't covered by the
GPL, and is *free* to do what you like with it.  But you'll find that
you've moved away from an OS with a large supportive following, and away
from one with a large supported hardware base.  There's a message in
that.

Using FC 4, 5, 6 & 7, plus CentOS 5.  Today, it's FC7.
