   Hello,
but "du -xk --max-depth=1 /" will not include a file say

usage of / . Is that ok?

Yes, it *does* include the space consumed by that file. Don't ask me
what the logic is here but the --max-depth=x option doesn't mean
man du
"du -s" is like "du --max-depth=1"

ignore all space consumed by files below that depth.
