Just at that time it executes /etc/rc.local.... is it possible you
edited anything in there before this started happening?

It would normally show you the text mode login prompt briefly before
trying to start X... you're not even seeing that?

If you have another machine on the local network, try pinging or ssh-ing
into this one.  Also try clicking the Caps Lock key and see if the Caps
Lock LED on the keyboard toggles, that'll tell you how dead it is.
