able to resolve names on the local net?

No, you'd need a local resolver such as BIND to resolve names to IP
addies. DHCP just provides IP addies, without resolving.

Okay, thanks to all who answered.
(And to clarify, yes, I did mean a Linksys box.)

I have a Linksys WRT54G router and it does NOT do any resolve only provide IP-addresses. However, I believe D-Link's DI-524 has a way of locking IP-addresses to MAC-addresses so that the static /etc/hosts will always be correct. For some this setup is adequate.
