No, sorry, I don't know how. This is a bug in k3b I think. You could
file a bug in bugzilla to see if the developers agree.

Unmounting using hal from the commandline:

$ gnome-mount -u -d /dev/hda

(where /dev/hda obviously is the DVD drive, substitute the proper
device name for your writer).

Note that you do not have to be root for this.
