I'm not sure I understand exactly what you are trying to do,
but I have a Linksys WRT54GL (running Linux dd-wrt) 
connected by ethernet to my desktop (which has a separate ADSL connection)
and also to another machine by ethernet,
as well as to various laptops by WiFi.

In other words, the WRT54GL has 4 ethernet connections,
and also acts as a WiFi access point.
It works pretty well.
