This happens even after shutdown from menu; separate problem with no menu shutdown option
TIA

Several thoughts:

1. Update your X packages, drop down to runlevel 3, switch back to
runlevel 5, and see if that will address your problem. (I have
libX11-1.0.3-7.fc6 and, most probably some other newer X packages.)

2. Check whether SELinux settings have an effect; e.g. set enforcement
to permissive or off.

3. Check whether you have a script running that is preventing X from
exiting properly. (Are you launching X from rc5.d?)
