Thank you folks.  This is working now after I chose not to use the Fedora Extras.  One baby step through and the next step is on the horizon.
It does not give me a very good impression that a stable build is that "stable" :-)

First, did you do an sha1sum on the ISO image you downloaded to make
sure it was OK before you burned the DVD?  If not, do it now.

Second, do NOT use any external repositories during the install.  That's
broken on FC6 installs.  Use only what's on the CD/DVD.  After the
system is installed, THEN you can "yum install" whatever you need.
