What I do here is install the Firefox tarball (extracted) in my home bin
subdirectory, backup the current files under ~/.mozilla and create a
launcher for pointing to where it presently lives. I still have the
Firefox that comes from the repositories which gets updated whenever it
does and I can invoke the latest one outside of that. It seems to work
for me including doing updates to it.

This way I don't interfere w/ the 'stock' installation.

It presently is in:

~/bin/firefox/firefox
