Sorry for responding off-topic, but I noticed that you are not using gnupg, but s/mime.

How do you get that to work? My mail program, kmail, supports it, but I am unable to load a p12 or pem certificate, even though both konqueror and firefox have it loaded.

Do you remember how you set it up? Which packages you need, in case I am missing some?

Take a look at:

http://sarwiki.informatik.hu-berlin.de/Thawte_certificate_with_own_private_key

I used this as a cookbook for getting it setup in Thunderbird and Evolution. Though I tried very hard, I never did get it to work in KMail.
