Try the following and see if it fixes it.  As the root user:

	# rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db* (that's two underscores)
	# rpm --rebuilddb

The "rpm --rebuilddb" will take a while to complete.  Then try your "yum
update" and see if it's better.
