Well, try to find out (as root):
rpm --verifydb
rpm -qa --last | less # and look toward the end for FC5 packages
package-cleanup --problems # also --leaves --dupes --orphans
rpm -Va
dmesg | less
less /var/log/messeges
# create a new user and try from there
and whatever else should be checked.
