scanning scsi and ide bus for devices

Dear All
If I have added a hot pluggable SCSI or IDE HDD in my linux machine,
how I can force my machine to scan scsi buses and/or ide buses to
recignize the newly connected device and creat its device name in
corresponding directory.  I know running kudzu is of no use.
