I distinctly remember at least one abort was in a program using one
of the regular expression library routines (unfortunately, can't
remember which one - there are a couple of them at least).

I've also had a lot of problems with openmotif apps (yes, old toolkit,
not in fedora anymore) aborting inside some sort of mysterious
"input method" code.

These aborts would all disappear with UTF-8 turned off.

I also see strange results for some programs. The output from "ls"
appears in mysterious and non-intuitive order unless I set the LC_ALL
variable to POSIX.

All in all, the more I can live and work in the old 7 bit ASCII
stick-in-the-mud world, the happier I am (you should see my .emacs
file - eradicating UTF-8 in emacs is *much* harder :-).
