Under certain conditions, freetype 2.2 seems to do a poor job of
rendering fonts compared to 2.1.  I'm not sure if other bug reports are
open on this, but I think I've seen KDE users talk about
enabling/disabling anti-aliasing to make font rendering better under FC6.

I do have anti-aliasing turned on. I have the same problem with or without the freetype bytecode interpreter enabled. Time to email on OO.org list I guess.
