That's be something like editing the old /etc/mailcap file.

Though, that has it's drawbacks for some people.  Some who use Gnome and
KDE (gluttons for punishment, they are), might want default apps to be
KDE ones when using KDE, and Gnome ones when using Gnome.  It's one of
those no-win situations.
