I followed this instructions: http://java.com/en/download/help/5000010500.xml#rpm and it works great for me.
Just remember to check the example strings so it match your version!

Sounds like you downloaded the wrong file. I just used his
instructions  a few days ago to install Java to my FC6 box, so
they do work. I can't get to it now, but I recall there being a
self-extracting rpm and .bin file. If you run one of them, you
get the rpm, if you run the other, you get the directory
structure he speaks of.
