The ISP doesn't get any control over the device. In the US we normal get ours from the ISP. The advantage of them owning that is they need to support it. If you are running your own router, reflashed with an open system, it is going to be very hard to keep the ISP from blaming your modem for any problems. If you stick with the delivered firmware you risk backdoor passwords put in to make support easier and law enforcement back doors reaching down to consumer gear (this probably hasn't happened yet, but things are moving in that direction).
