It seems to be a bad RAM module or slot, one of the original ones. I am now up 
and running on 2 GB of RAM. Comforting to know, and hopefully easily fixed. 
Thanks for all the help, and wish me luck. This machine cost a lump of money, 
and I would hate to, well, I don't need to say anymore.
