I have re-installing the kernel in between attempts, but have come to
the conclusion that I am making a mistake somewhere.

I have 3945 running on a Samsung Q35 with the same kernel without problems. My
method is detailed at http://www-users.york.ac.uk/~mdc1/samsung.html

Ditto... as Mike says on the page on recent kernels you can ignore the ieee80211 stack update business. I would start over using Mike's reference but ignoring the ieee80211 stuff altogether.

The stuff is really nice and stable when it is up, and it works with wpa_supplicant okay as well so you can have WPA and not just WEP.
