What was causing the machine to go down? I know the unpatched version of
Qmail isn't 64-bit clean, but that shouldn't bring down the whole system.

All decent server software should be 64-bit clean for years now. This
shouldn't be an issue.

But really, you're tempting fate to use any version Fedora on a production
server. If you need free, CentOS fills this part of the ecosystem.
