I ran into some issues with Cyrix the other day - seems 2.6 kernels
don't particulary like some of the Cyrix CPUs.

If you have another faster box in the same location, you might be able
to use the POS machine as a thin terminal (LTSP), although 32 Mb of
memory might slow you down.  Also XDMCP (remote X) creates a *lot* of
network traffic.  On the upside, running java on the terminal should
be no big deal if it's installed on the faster machine.
