I've had similar problems on an FC5 system with a Radeon card. The
problem seems to be provoked by playing audio: the first symptom is loss
of the panel. If I get to it fairly quickly, I can cure things by
killing artsd; then the panel reappears, and the system recovers. If I
don't kill artsd fairly fast (no time estimates available), I lose the
keyboard and sometimes the mouse. Note that the system is x86-64.

System info:
        Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+
        System: FC5 with all updates
Video: ATI RV280 (9200) using proprietary driver
