Try not to use RPM packages for Tomcat if you:

1. Want to learn more about how Tomcat works (which is highly
recommended-- it's not that hard, and its worth the few hours you spend)

2. Want to avoid dependencies -- the Tomcat package from the Apache site
is stand-alone, meaning that once you unpack it, you have a working
Tomcat distribution right there. I have never used the Tomcat RPMs, but
I suspect that they may have dependencies that may or may not force you
to install other packages which you may or may not need. Anyway, if
you're just beginning, you'll want to keep it simple.

I wrote a document for Tomcat 5.0.x. It's outdated now (last update was
in 2004), but at least it's more advanced than version 4. ;) See:
http://cymulacrum.net/writings/tomcat5/book1.html

I don't have time now to update it and have not tried version 5.5. Use
instructions at own risk.
