When I use
X :1 -query remote_server

all I get is a blank screen with the X cursor. I really miss just starting a session with ssh and then setting the
DISPLAY variable to point to my screen!!

The remote_server must be running XDMCP. Also, it must have port 177 open in its firewall.

The X server machine (the one on which you run X :1) must have port 6001 open to allow X clients to connect back to the X server which is started (each X server listens, by default, on port 6000+display number, so :0 is 6000, :1 is 6001 etc.).
