I think the check only happens on the next reboot, not on the shutdown itself
i.e. from "man shutdown"

    -F     Force fsck on reboot.

try turning the machine back on.

Thanks, Chris. The option '-r' forces a reboot, also according to 'man
shutdown', and my computer was indeed rebooted. The problem is that I
did not get any message saying that my file system is fine or not.
