the m for small alphabet and the B U and V seem to cause the
greatest problem when trying to distinguish characters.

The mono version shows the greatest spacing error problems.

The combination of characters mVaBcUtBm is highly overlapped.
Hmmm. I don't notice this. I'm viewing this message in mutt running
in a gnome-terminal using DejaVu Sans Mono Book 11.

Is it possible that other font settings (dpi, smoothing, hinting, or
subpixel order) may be the cause of this?

The main problem seemed to be caused by the dpi setting of 94 dpi. I reduced the setting to 74 and am seeing fonts more to my taste. I also adjusted hinting to slight and checked subpixels since it was an LCD.

I'd be happy to send you a screen shot and my font settings if you
think it might help narrow down any possible bugs in fontconfig or in
the DejaVu fonts.

Yes Jim, please post you font settings and a screenshot of the problem
so it can all be traced (and hopefully resolved)

Thanks for the assistance. I was unaware that there were so many factors which influence the rendering of the fonts. I'm satisfied with both bug report diagnostics.

Regards,
