A vanilla kernel is what you can download from kernel.org.

Kernels used in Linux distributions typically contain
modifications (bugfixes, experimental features...).

When talking about a bug, one could say "I'm using the
most recent Fedora kernel but I verified the problem
happens on vanilla 2.6.17 too".
