Can it do that for anything, or only as a side effect of a prior action.

e.g. If you ping "machinename" (an unimaginative example hostname), and
nothing else has had any traffic with "machinename", will it work?  Or
would you have had to do something with SMB beforehand, and Windows had
cached the address?
